What Is the Heart and Circulatory System?

Sunday, May 29th, 2005 | Author: susheewa

heart What Is the Heart and Circulatory System? The circulatory system is composed of the heart and blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries. Our bodies actually have two circulatory systems: The pulmonary (pronounced: pul-muh-ner-ee) circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again, and the systemic (pronounced: sis-teh-mik) circulation (the system we usually think of as our circulatory system) sends blood from the heart to all the other parts of our bodies and back again.

Egg Allergy Diet

Saturday, May 28th, 2005 | Author: susheewa

egg What Is an Egg Allergy? A food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system mistakenly believes a food is harmful and identifies an offending substance, or allergen, in that food. People with an egg allergy react to the proteins in the egg white or the yolk. The body produces antibodies that trigger an allergic reaction as they rush in to fight off the invasion.

Research has shown that up to 8% of children in the United States are affected by food allergies. Eggs are among the eight foods that cause 90% of all allergic reactions in children (milk, peanuts, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and tree nuts are the other seven). Egg allergy, which is usually outgrown by age 5, is most often identified when the child first eats eggs or egg products.

How to Avoid Hot Tub Rash

Friday, May 27th, 2005 | Author: susheewa

Medical Author: Melissa Stoppler, M.D. Medical Editor: William C. Shiel, Jr, MD, FACP, FACR rash Hot tub rash is an infection of the skin (dermatitis) or of the hair follicles in the skin (folliculitis) acquired from contact with contaminated water. The infection occurs most commonly after swimming in hot tubs or spas, but contaminated swimming pools or lakes may also spread the infection.

Most cases of hot tub rash are caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an organism abundant in nature and found in soil, water, and on plants. Hot tub rash usually begins with itchy skin or itchy bumps on the skin, which progress to form tender red nodules that may contain pus. Pus-containing sores are also commonly present around hair follicles. The rash is often worse under the areas of skin covered by a swimsuit, since the swimsuit can keep the contaminated water in contact with the skin for a longer period of time. Hot tub rash appears within two days after contact with contaminated water.

Hot tub rash generally resolves on its own within a few days, and medical treatment is rarely necessary. Complications of hot tub rash are rare and include abscess formation. In severe cases or when a skin abscess develops, you doctor may prescribe an antibiotic.

Frequent testing of water in pools and hot tubs and adequate control of disinfectant levels and pH are critical steps in preventing hot tub rash. Since hot tubs have warmer water than pools, disinfectants such as chlorine break down and lose their effectiveness faster in hot tubs than in pools. Thorough cleaning and disinfecting of a pool or hot tub where the infection has been acquired is also essential to prevent recurrence of the rash

Getting Rid of Dandruff

Thursday, May 26th, 2005 | Author: susheewa

Dandruff (HealthDay News) — If dandruff is the only thing standing between you and a nice black shirt or sweater, you’re not alone.

At any one time, millions of Americans have this chronic scalp disorder, which is marked by itching and excessive flaking of the scalp — and embarrassment.

The good news is that dandruff can usually be controlled. Mild cases may need nothing more than daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser. And stubborn flakes often respond to medicated shampoos.

more … Stress

What’s more, researchers have identified a yeast-like fungus that may cause or aggravate dandruff, a discovery that may lead to better treatments and even to a whole new wardrobe.

You can’t prevent dandruff, but the Mayo Clinic says you can take steps to reduce your risk of getting this surprisingly persistent condition:

* Learn to manage stress. Stress affects your overall health, making you susceptible to a number of conditions and diseases. It can even help trigger dandruff or exacerbate existing symptoms.
* Shampoo often. If you tend to have an oily scalp, daily shampooing to remove the excess oil may help prevent dandruff.
* Cut back on styling products. Hair sprays, styling gels, mousses and hair waxes can all build up on your hair and scalp, making them oilier. Some people may even develop allergies to various hair-care products.
* Eat a healthy diet. For overall good health, include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and small amounts of lean protein in your diet.
* Get a little sun. Sunlight may be good for dandruff. But because exposure to ultraviolet light damages your skin and increases your risk of skin cancer, don't sunbathe. Instead, just spend a little time outdoors. But wear sunscreen on your face and body.

Risk factors predicting changes in marijuana involvement in teenagers.

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005 | Author: susheewa

kids BACKGROUND: Marijuana use during adolescence has various adverse psychological and health outcomes. It is poorly understood whether the same risk factors influence different stages in the development of marijuana involvement. OBJECTIVE: To establish which risk factors best explain different stages of marijuana involvement. DESIGN: Data were collected at 2 points using computer-assisted personal interview (wave 1 and wave 2 were separated by 1 year). Twenty-one well-established risk factors of adolescent substance use/abuse were used to predict 5 stages of marijuana involvement: (1) initiation of experimental use, (2) initiation of regular use, (3) progression to regular use, (4) failure to discontinue experimental use, and (5) failure to discontinue regular use. Data were analyzed using logistic regression analysis. PARTICIPANTS: Middle school and high school students (N = 13 718, aged 11-21 years) participating in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). RESULTS: Three risk factors (own and peer involvement with substances, delinquency, and school problems) were the strongest predictors of all stages. Their combined presence greatly increased risk of initiation of experimental (odds ratio, 20) and regular (odds ratio, 87) marijuana use over the next year. Personality, family, religious, and pastime factors exerted stage-specific, sex-specific, and age-specific influences. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of substance, school, and delinquency factors is important in identifying individuals at high risk for continued involvement with marijuana. Prevention and/or intervention efforts should focus on these areas of risk.

Protecting Yourself from the Sun

Saturday, May 21st, 2005 | Author: susheewa

(HealthDay News) — The hot, hazy days of summer are just around the corner — and so is overexposure to the sun. Contrary to popular myth, a good tan is not a measure of good health, but actually a sign of skin injury.

Too much sun can cause sunburn, wrinkles, freckles, skin texture changes, dilated blood vessels, rash problems and worst of all, deadly skin cancers.

The American Academy of Dermatology offers these suggestions on how to enjoy the sun safely:

* Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of at least 15 on all exposed skin, including the lips, even on cloudy days.
* If exposed to water, either through swimming or sweating, a water-resistant sunscreen should be used.
* Reapply sunscreen frequently.
* Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
* Sit in the shade whenever possible.
* Wear protective, tightly-woven clothing.
* Plan outdoor activities early or late in the day to avoid peak sunlight hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
