Aug. 29, 2005 ? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported in the Aug. 26 issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on the prevalence of preventable measles cases in U.S. residents, underscoring the need for vaccination of international travelers and infants; shigellosis outbreaks in adult men who have sex with other men; and an increased prevalence of hypertension in non-Hispanic black Americans compared with the general population.

Factors leading to nonvaccination of children may include a lack of awareness regarding immunization guidelines, and refusal of MCV due to personal/religious beliefs or a lack of perceived risk.

If you’re new to jogging, the American Physical Therapy Association offers these tips to help you get started:
Alternate between jogging and walking until you build up your endurance.
Use the “talk test” to pace yourself. If you can’t talk comfortably while jogging, you’re pushing too hard.
Avoid hard surfaces whenever possible. Dirt paths are better than asphalt, and asphalt is better than concrete.
Take care when running over grassy areas. They may hide holes, rocks, and other potential hazards.

British researchers reported that screening newborns for hearing impairment improved early detection by 43 percent..
The research team followed 66 children, all of whom experienced some form of hearing problem. Some had been tested for hearing impairment just after birth, while others were given a more general test at 7 to 8 months of age.
The researchers found that 23 of the 31 (74 percent) children given the hearing test soon after birth were referred for treatment before 6 months of age, compared to just 11 of the 35 (31 percent) who did not receive the neonatal screen.
