Empirical Data

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

empirical According to Achinstein, Peter, and Barker, Stephen F. (1969), Originally, “empirical” was used by the skeptic Sextus Empiricus to refer to those ancient Greek practitioners of medicine who rejected adherence to the dogmatic doctrines of the day, preferring instead to rely on the observation of phenomena as perceived in experience. Therefore, empirical data is often very accurate, although it is not accepted as scientifically experiment because there are some noise and error occasionally.

Empiricism

According to wikipedia “In the philosophy of science, empiricism is a theory of knowledge which emphasizes those aspects of scientific knowledge that are closely related to experience, especially as formed through deliberate experimental arrangements. It is a fundamental requirement of scientific method that all hypotheses and theories must be tested against observations of the natural world, rather than resting solely on a priori reasoning, intuition, or revelation. Hence, science is considered to be methodologically empirical in nature.”

Child development research:

Wednesday, November 29th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

I found this essay is very useful for others who are interested in children development,so I want to put it in my blog to share to other people. So you can go to the website that I have linked below directly.

“The article entitled An Analysis of Schema Theory and Learning Theory as Explanations for Variance in Adolescent Adjustment to Divorce is a research done with adolescents to see how well a child and his or her parents adjust to divorce. The researchers are trying to find a way to help children deal with divorce. The researchers are trying to see if there is a connection between a child?s age and their sex that affects the way they adjust to divorce. After trying to see if these two factors are connected, researchers then also study to see if a child?s relationships with his or her parents also have a role in the child?s adjustment. This research was done to help understand if schema theory had something to do with the children?s adjustment when it came to divorce. With all the possibilities, the researchers wanted to narrow it down using the schema theory. The schema theory is said to be a way of thinking, and not wanting to change what you know.”(http://sv2.123helpme.com/view.asp?id=58302

Research Essay

Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

Learning how to be a good essay writing is not easy, and also learning how to be a good writer in research essay is quite more difficult. An essay is more than just putting facts from your research, it is an opportunity for you to voice your own opinion. A strong essay is one that uses facts to support an argument based on the writer’s analysis of the topic. Even though this is easier said then done.

I think and I hope that this website is gonna be useful for other people who are in the same situation as me.

Research

Monday, November 27th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

In term of research mean the process of gathering information within the purpose of initiating, modifying or terminating a particular investment or group of investments.

According to wikipedia website “Research is often described as an active, diligent, and systematic process of inquiry aimed at discovering, interpreting, and revising facts. This intellectual investigation produces a greater knowledge of events, behaviors, theories, and laws and makes practical applications possible. The term research is also used to describe an entire collection of information about a particular subject, and is usually associated with the output of science and the scientific method. The word research derives from the obsolete french recherche, from rechercher, to search closely where “chercher” means “to search” (see French language); its literal meaning is ‘to investigate thoroughly’.”

Survey Strategy

Sunday, November 26th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

survey In term of survey,Dencombe(2003) mention that “survey”mean to view comprehensively and in detail. It is short but it is quite clear for me to understand immediately.Even though I always use survey to be a part of my academic role,I sometimes feel confuse about what is exactly meaning and want is give advantages for us.Therefore, today I want to focus on survey and hope it will be useful for others as well.

According to the website “Surveys represent one of the most common types of quantitative, social science research. In survey research, the researcher selects a sample of respondents from a population and administers a standardized questionnaire to them. The questionnaire, or survey, can be a written document that is completed by the person being surveyed, an online questionnaire, a face-to-face interview, or a telephone interview. Using surveys, it is possible to collect data from large or small populations (sometimes referred to as the universe of a study).

Different types of surveys are actually composed of several research techniques, developed by a variety of disciplines. For instance, interview began as a tool primarily for psychologists and anthropologists, while sampling got its start in the field of agricultural economics (Angus and Katona, 1953, p. 15).

Survey research does not belong to any one field and it can be employed by almost any discipline. According to Angus and Katona, “It is this capacity for wide application and broad coverage which gives the survey technique its great usefulness…” (p. 16). ” (http://writing.colostate.edu/guides/research/survey/)

Focus group interview “A Focus group interview is an interview with a small group of people on a specific topic.Groups are particularly six to eight who participate in the interview for one-half to two hours.” (Patton,2002)

Interviewer Character of interviewer should be flexible, objective, empathic, persuasive and a good listener.(Fontana and Frey,2000)During interview, interviewer must balance between steering and moderating.

The advantages of this method are: Low cost Rich of data

The weakness: The limited number of questions The problem of taking note during interview.

Happy Thanksgiving

Friday, November 24th, 2006 | Author: susheewa

thanksgiving

According to wikipwdia”Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is an annual one-day holiday to give thanks (traditionally to God) for the things one has at the close of the harvest season. In the United States, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, and in Canada it is celebrated on the second Monday in October. In the United Kingdom, Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest festival, held in churches across the country on a relevant Sunday to mark the end of the local harvest, though it is not thought of as a major event (compared to Christmas or Easter) as it is in other parts of the world. This tradition was taken to North America by early settlers, where it became much more important.”

First Thanksgiving

In 1621 the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast which is now known as the first Thanksgiving. While cooking methods and table etiquette have changed as the holiday has evolved, the meal is still consumed today with the same spirit of celebration and overindulgence.(http://www.history.com/minisite.do?contenttype=minihome&mini_id=1083)

Case Study

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006 | Author: susheewa

case studyudy The term “case study” has multiple meanings. It can be used to describe a unit of analysis (e.g. a case study of a particular organisation) or to describe a research method. The discussion here concerns the use of the case study as a research method. (http://www.qual.auckland.ac.nz/case.htm)

A case study is an empirical inquiry that:

1.investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context, especially when 2.the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident (Yin 2002).

According to wikipedia”A case study is a particular method of qualitative research. Rather than using large samples and following a rigid protocol to examine a limited number of variables, case study methods involve an in-depth, longitudinal examination of a single instance or event: a case. They provide a systematic way of looking at events, collecting data, analyzing information, and reporting the results. As a result the researcher may gain a sharpened understanding of why the instance happened as it did, and what might become important to look at more extensively in future research. Case studies lend themselves to both generating and testing hypotheses (Flyvbjerg 2006).”

Grounded theory

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006 | Author: susheewa

According to the wikipedia “Grounded theory (GT) is a general research method (most often associated with qualitative research) for social sciences developed by the sociologists Barney Glaser (b. 1930) and Anselm Strauss (1916-1996). Their successful collaboration in research on dying in hospitals resulted in the book Awareness of Dying and the constant comparative method, later named grounded theory in The Discovery of Grounded Theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967). Grounded theory was developed as a systematic methodology, and its name underscores the generation of theory from data. When the principles of grounded theory are followed, a researcher using this approach will formulate a theory, either substantive (setting specific) or formal, about the phenomena they are studying that can be evaluated.” Grounded Theory
